The first AGE Meeting of the 2016-2017 school year was a success! If you were not able to make it (or had to leave early), this email will fill you in on everything that was discussed at the meeting.
Before we get to the summary, the next AGE meeting will be Thrusday, October 6th. (Three weeks from today.)
Apart from the introductions and a brief discussion about re-registration and funding, which Michael Roberts is taking care of, the meeting focused on detailing some upcoming projects. These are listed below.
1. AGE/ECON Club – Graduate Student Panel
On November 16th, Michael Roberts and a faculty member will participate in a panel where undergraduate ECON students can come with questions they might have about pursuing a graduate degree in economics. There will be a follow up a couple weeks later where AGE graduate students will go and help undergraduates with their applications to graduate school. Michael Roberts will need some volunteers to help with this. There will be a reminder as the date gets closer.
2. Brown Bag Seminar Series
You should have recently received an email about the Brown Bag Seminar series. These seminars will take place on Wednesdays at 3pm in Clark C307, unless otherwise noted. The first seminar is September 21st (next week). The entire schedule was given in the email mentioned above. This seminar is being orchestrated by Michael Trouw and Arpan Ganguly so you can contact them with any questions you might have.
3. John Watkins Lecture
John Watkins, a professor of economics at Westminster College in Salt Lake City, is scheduled to come lecture this fall. The lecture date is Thursday, October 20th, at 6:00p. There will also be a graduate student lunch on the day of the lecture. This is being organized by Melanie and any questions you may have can be directed to her.
4. Recruiting Graduate Students
Michael Roberts is looking into to getting funding to do some outreach for the CSU graduate program in economics. This may consist of CSU graduate students visiting nearby colleges and universities to court students that are looking to pursue a graduate degree in economics. If you have any ideas or would like to get involved in this project, Michael would be the person to contact.
5. Movie Night
At 7:00p on Monday, October 3rd, the AGE is going to be having a movie night. The movie will most likely be shown in a classroom in the Behavioral Sciences building. There is talk of including popcorn, or some other food, and maybe something to drink. A Doodle poll will be sent out so that we can vote on which movie we would most want to see. The three movies to be voted on are The Big Short, Billy Madison, and Soul Kitchen. You can contact Arpan with any questions or suggestions concerning the movie night.
6. The Mentor Mixer
Edward is going to spearhead the Mentor Mixer. This will be a relaxed social gathering where first year graduate students will have the opportunity to talk with 3rd years, 4th years, and beyond. The purpose of the Mentor Mixer is to find older students with similar interests who might be able to give helpful advice and provide a beneficial academic relationship. You can contact Edward with any questions you might have about the Mentor Mixer.
7. Panel on College Cost/Tuition/Student Debt
This project is its beginning stages. Arpan, Quinton, and Levi are hoping to bring together a few panelists that would be willing to address the issue of college cost/tuition/student debt. The precise topic/question has not been determined yet. We are looking to include CSU administrator, possibly a faculty member representing the education department, and a faculty member representing the economics department. Quinton, Arpan, and Levi will be meeting next Thursday to further discuss this project. If you have any questions or suggestions, feel free to contact any one of us.
8. The “Welcome Back” Spring Party
I’m guessing this will be much like the “welcome back” Fall party. This is a long way out and we didn’t go over the details. Edward is leading on this project so if you have any questions, or you would like to help plan, you can contact him.
